This Balinese Hindu temple is dedicated to the worship of God in the form of Batara Shiva Rudra. Although it’s not clear when the temple was constructed, it is believed to have been built during the reign of Sri Masula-Masuli, a husband and wife kingdom in the 9th century.

The history of the temple has two different opinions.

1. According to one belief, Uluwatu Temple was constructed during the reign of Marakata in the 9th century by a Buddhist priest named Mpu Kuturan from Girah village in East Java.

   He was also known by other titles such as Dang Hyang Dwijendra and Ida Pedanda Sakti Wawu Rauh. He came to Bali on a spiritual journey called dharmayatra, but he never returned to Java.During his journey, he built several temples in remote parts of Bali, including Uluwatu Temple located on the Pecatu hill.
